About the book: 2021 / Leigh Brackett (1915-1978) was born in Los Angeles, grew up in the vicinity of Santa Monica. As a child, Brackett was a tomboy who read the novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs and Henry Rider Haggard, and soon began to write her own stories of fantasy adventures. The biographical note to the collection of early works of the writer “The Martian Gladiator” (“The Martian Quest”) says that Henry Kuttner got acquainted with the first attempts at writing Leigh Brackett, who introduced her to California science fiction writers: Cleve Cartmill, Robert Heinlein, Julius Schwartz, Jack Williamson , Edmond Hamilton and many others, including the then unpublished Ray Bradbury. Brackett published her first story in 1939 in John Campbell's Astounding, but quickly moved into the pulp fiction camp, becoming a regular contributor to Planet Stories. Brackett also wrote hard-boiled detective stories, such as her first novel, A Dead Body is No Good. A friend and admirer of Brackett’s talent, Michael Moorcock, said: “Like most of her heroes, Lee preferred to live outside the rules. She always said that her first love was science fantasy. She spoke deliberately defiantly, although they paid much less for work in this genre than for other publications in pulp magazines. Even less than for other types of fiction. If she had decided to write about the slums of Los Angeles, and not about the nooks and crannies of space, she would have earned much more... The thirst for freedom forced her and many other contemporaries to choose a less profitable genre.” And further: “There was a time when science fantasy was looked down upon as the bastard child of science fiction (a genre devoted to scientific conjecture) and fantasy (a genre devoted to magic).” Contents: The Skate Saga: 1.
