A friend and admirer of Brackett’s talent, Michael Moorcock, said: “Like most of her heroes, Lee preferred to live outside the rules. She always said that her first love was science fantasy. She spoke deliberately defiantly, although they paid much less for work in this genre than for other publications in pulp magazines. Even less than for other types of fiction. If she had decided to write about the slums of Los Angeles, and not about the nooks and crannies of space, she would have earned much more...
