About the book: 1987 / This is not an adventure novel, it is a novel about an adventurer, that is, about a person who has chosen adventure as his profession. The reader is invited to resolve an interesting psychological conflict: Constable Hugo - the so-called artillery officer in the 17th century - is a traitor and a spy. Moreover: at the trial, he boldly confesses not to seven, but to twenty-two mortal sins, and among others, cannibalism and making a pact with the devil appear - very piquant deviations from the honest and thorny path of life. However, one cannot fail to recognize the charm, intelligence and desperate courage of the adventurer. What tricks does fate throw Hugo into borderline and conflict situations? Who is Hugo? A criminal or a noble hero, or a victim of evil fate? The geographical horizon of the novel is very wide - Poland, Germany, Holland, India, the ocean. We are constantly in exotic landscapes, where people of dubious callings - Haidamaks, “knights of the goat”, “Templars”, counterfeiters, murderers, witches - display their dangerous activity. The narrative is not just curious, but excitingly interesting in its complex and intense dynamism. There are absolutely no commonplaces, prosaisms, tedious landscape or philosophical periods. Action and only action, surprise every next minute! The inimitable humor in conveying situations, phraseology, costumes, and everyday details of the lives of monks, robbers, nobles, and charlatans is originally combined with a tragic intonation, rising to a purely romantic pathos. The novel “The Adventures of the Adventurer Hugo von Habenicht” can be compared with the best works of this genre, which honors the versatility of the talent of its creator, the classic of Hungarian literature Mora Jokai.
