There is a sensation in a provincial Russian city: a major banker and businessman has been killed. The reader is confronted with a series of suspects, many of whom were enemies of the murdered man. Events in the novel develop in such a way that one crime, as if in a chain, leads to another. But an unusual outcome awaits the impatient reader at the end of the novel. The title novel and the stories, which are not connected by plot, are nevertheless united by a common character - the talented and ingenuous detective Alexey Romanovich Patmosov, who skillfully investigates incredibly complicated cases.
