About the book: 2011 / The name of Yisroel-Yeshua Singer (1893–1944) is mentioned in Russia mainly in connection with his brother, the writer Isaac Bashevis. Meanwhile, I.-I. Singer was not only the older brother of the Nobel laureate in literature, but, above all, the largest Jewish prose writer of the first half of the 20th century, one of the best stylists in Yiddish literature. His name was glorified by large “family” novels, but in his stories he retains the same magical persuasiveness and “presence effect”, making the reader believe in everything that is happening. Stories by I.-I. Singer paints a broad panorama of Jewish life at the beginning of the 20th century, from Polish towns to New York. But at the center of each story is a simple person, resisting the pressure of society and circumstances, winning or dying in this struggle.
