Pleasant thoughts completely lulled the policeman, but the door to his office suddenly swung open. This happened so suddenly that Celestino Malpaga (that was the name of the police chief), jumping slightly in his chair, threw a displeased look at the uninvited guest. However, Celestino's face instantly brightened as soon as he recognized this little plump man with a dashingly curled mustache and thinning, but carefully curled hair. The guest's black tie was pinned with a pearl pin, his right hand was adorned with a ring with a huge stone, and his dark suit further emphasized the impeccable whiteness of his pique vest. The picture was complemented by lacquered boots polished to an incredible shine. Such a strange sight was presented by none other than Commissioner Romeo Tarcinini, a subordinate and childhood friend of Celestino Malpaga.
