About the book: year / Marie-Joseph Sue (this is the real name of the writer, he will take the name “Eugene” later as a literary pseudonym - as a sign of attention to his godfather) was born into a doctor's family. His father, Jean-Baptiste Sue, in the few years that followed the Great Revolution, made a dizzying career: from an ordinary doctor he became the chief physician of the imperial guard, a personal friend of Napoleon, and after the Bourbon restoration - into a royal physician and member of the Academy of Medicine. But in 1804, the fall of Napoleon was still far away, and the baby Marie-Joseph would receive brilliant godparents: Josephine Beauharnais (soon turned from the wife of the first consul into an empress), and Napoleon's stepson Eugene Beauharnais (the future prince). Since 1825, Eugene Sue, “out of nothing to do,” occasionally turns to literature: together with his friends he writes plays that are completely pro-Catholic and pro-monarchist. On the eve of the July Revolution of 1830, father Jean-Baptiste Sue dies, and young Eugene becomes heir to a fantastic annuity of 80,000 francs. Eugene returns to Paris, where he leads the dazzling life of a “socialite”: he spends money left and right, enjoys insane success with women, visits both Bonapartist and Legitimist salons, founds the aristocratic Jockey Club, and becomes one of the first dandies of Paris. Eugene Sue turns into a fashion writer. From plays he moves to short stories, from short stories to “sea novels” in the spirit of late romanticism. Xiu becomes almost the ideal of secular youth.
