About the book: 2023 / Military counterintelligence is a special service aimed at combating enemy agents, sabotage and intelligence activities, disorganizing the activities of the Armed Forces in zones of deployment and movement and regroupings, as well as in the front-line zone (transport hubs, recently liberated territories, etc.) in wartime. By the beginning of the Great Patriotic War of the Red Army, military counterintelligence operated at the level of military districts. After the start of the war, military counterintelligence departments became part of the fronts, and in March 1943, the Main Counterintelligence Directorate "SMERSH" of the People's Commissariat of Defense of the USSR, abbreviated "SMERSH", was formed. From that moment on, the effectiveness of the activities of this special service increased significantly. How a result was achieved that contributed to victories in subsequent battles (operations “Citadel”, “Bagration”, Yassko-Kishinevskaya, etc.) is described in this collection. The articles included in the collection make it possible to present the peculiarities of the activities of military counterintelligence since the beginning of the war in its development through the fates of SMERSH employees who performed tasks of amazing complexity in the front-line and behind-the-front zones as intelligence officers, saboteurs, specialists in radio games and recruitment.
