MediaDB / «Elder Silouan of Athos" Sophrony Sakharov: download fb2, read online
About the book: 1996 / The book is structurally divided into two parts: the first part was written by the author, who, when he was a resident of the St. Panteleimon Monastery on Holy Mount Athos, was a student Elder Silouan, and is called “The Life and Teaching of the Elder”, the second part consists of the elder’s diary entries and is called “The Writings of Elder Silouan”. Archimandrite Sophrony modestly called his book work “life”, that is, he tried only to the best of his ability to give an image of his teacher , summing up the spiritual path he had traveled, as far as it was given to him to hear from the elder and learn from the diary entries found after his death. At the same time, Father Sophrony notes that he did not try to give the book a scientific and formal character and therefore deliberately avoided many comparisons and references in the text to the works of the holy fathers of the church. The author more than once emphasizes that the spiritual monastic path of Elder Silouan lies strictly in line with the ascetic life of the Orthodox monasticism in general, and those ideas and traditions of ascetic work that exist on Holy Mount Athos in particular. In this sense, the holiness of Elder Silouan is identical to the holiness of many Orthodox monks, but it also has its own individual characteristics or, more precisely, originality. This originality of the elder’s monastic feat gave the right to many Orthodox Christians around the world to call the Venerable Father Silouan “the apostle of love of the twentieth century.” *** On November 26, 1987, the Orthodox Church of Constantinople performed the canonization of Silouan of Athos. The name of St. Silouan of Athos was included in the monthly calendar of the Moscow Patriarchate for 1992 with the blessing of Patriarch Alexy II. *** On November 27, 2019, the Orthodox Church of Constantinople canonized Archimandrite Sophrony Sakharov as Saint Sophrony of Athos.
