About the book: 2013 / Lenizdat presents the book "The Man from the Orchestra. Siege diary of Lev Margulis. These are notes from a violinist who took part in the first legendary performance of D. D. Shostakovich’s Seventh Symphony in besieged Leningrad. The recording period covers the most tragic months of the city’s life: from June 1941 to January 1943. The book uses unique materials from the city archives. Extensive comments by A. N. Kryukov, a researcher of music radio broadcasting in Leningrad during the Second World War and the siege, as well as comments by the historian A. S. Romanov, revealing the realities of the siege and war, allow us to better understand the contents of the diary, find out what happened during the siege in the city and around him. Both the diary and the comments show what physical and moral tests the residents of the besieged city were subjected to, revealing previously unknown tragic pages in the life of the Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra of the Leningrad Radio Committee. The insert presents photographs and documents from personal and city archives. Readers will also be able to see the score of the Seventh Symphony, stored in the music library of the Radio House. The book was published in the year of the seventieth anniversary of the first performance of the Seventh Symphony in besieged Leningrad. The book opens with an introduction by Yuri Temirkanov.
