About the book: 1936 / He sensed that there was a raid on the train, knew what it meant. From somewhere on the side of the diesel locomotive came the cry of a railway police detective: “Behind the ear and into the sun, kids, by the ear and into the sun!” The tramps fell like peas from the train. He heard them screaming and swearing in the darkness. Meanwhile, the train crawled past. They always used this technique on freight trains: they allowed tramps to climb into the cars at the station, on sidings, but they were not caught there, otherwise it would turn into a stupid game of hide and seek between two or three cops and two or three hundred tramps. No, they acted much smarter. They left the hares alone, then waited until the train had traveled a few miles. Then they told the driver to slow down - so that the guys could jump off calmly. But it was already difficult for them to climb back, since the train was picking up speed. Then the cops combed the entire train and shook the hares out of the cars, like caterpillars from a branch. And two minutes later they all found themselves in a roadside ditch - a crowd of angry, ragged men. In the open air, near an embankment, in a deserted place. The tramps knew the rules of the game, but they always cursed and were always surprised, as if this had happened to them for the first time.
