About the book: 2009 / Boris Ivanovich Ivanov is one of the central figures in the unofficial culture of the 1960-1980s, permanent publisher and editor of the samizdat magazine “Clocks”, collector of people and texts, negotiator with the authorities, tactician and strategist of the Leningrad literary and philosophical underground. Due to Ivanov’s incredible social activity, his prose, published mainly in samizdat, remained in the shadows. The publication of the two-volume book “The Harvest of Victims” and “Nevsky in Winter” corrects the situation. Ivanov’s prose is, first of all, the author’s human experience, the ability to hear someone else’s voice, to understand other people’s destinies. In his works, the story, image, plot are always reliable and endowed with a generalizing meaning. The author introduces us to real images of war heroes (the cycle “White City”, “Goodbye, Comrades”, “Matvey and Otto”), victims of “thaw hopes” (“Bastard”) and participants in the cultural resistance of decades of stagnation - writers and artists (“The night is long and quiet, the shepherd is slaughtering the sheep”, “The Brass Horse and the Guide”, “On the Departure of a Beloved Brother”). Chapters from the memoir “Beyond Officiality” reveal little-known sides of spiritual resistance to dictatorship.
