At the beginning of the 20th century about this fateful The Jews of Russia were known in almost every Jewish home during the process. In those years, every mention of a Jewish surname in the press was perceived by Jews with great caution. Many Jewish pogroms have already swept across Russia, the infamous Chisinau pogrom took place, which claimed many human lives, millions of Jews have already left Russia and headed some to America, some to Argentina, and some, carried away by the Zionist idea, to create their own state in Palestine. And now a new grief - the Beilis Case. This process, which attracted the enormous, intense attention of all of Russia, was organized by the leaders of the Kyiv Black Hundreds with the assistance of the highest authorities, including the Minister of Justice I. G. Shcheglovitov himself. Mendel Beilis, a clerk at Zaitsev's brick factory, was accused of killing an Orthodox boy, Andrei Yushchinsky, on March 20, 1911. The Black Hundred press stated that the murder was committed for ritual purposes. On July 2, 1911, Beilis was arrested. It is not difficult to imagine what a blow would have been dealt to Russian Jewry if the plans of the Black Hundreds had come true and the court had recognized that it was a ritual murder. Not only the fate of Beilis was at stake, but the fate of all Russian Jewry and its honor.
