The book compares the letter of the law with its application in practice. Court cases reveal the daily lives of people and communities and their relationships with the state. The author places Russia in the comparative context of early modern Europe and comes to the conclusion that during the Moscow period and in the time of Peter the Great, Russia had a judicial culture that was in many ways comparable to the judicial culture of a number of European countries.
