About the book: 1960 / Viktor Fedorovich Avdeev was born in 1909 in the village of Uryupinskaya, Khopersky district, Don region, into a Cossack family. When the boy was orphaned, his relatives sent him and his older brother to a boarding school named after the worker Pyotr Alekseev in the city of Novocherkassk. From here he was taken in by a certain Novikov. Soon the “named parent” abandoned the child. Years of homelessness and wandering begin for the boy. In 1925, in Kharkov, he was taken from the orphanage for patronage by the cell of the Ukrainian Red Cross and Friends of Children under the board of the Southern Railways and assigned to a seven-year sentence. Victor settles with the chairman of the cell, Melnichuk. His passion for the works of Maxim Gorky, especially his early stories, prompted Avdeev to become a writer. However, the path to literature was long: illiteracy and lack of culture hampered him. Victor came to Moscow as a “hare”. In his jacket pockets, along with a towel and a toothbrush, he brought two stories written about his experiences. In the capital, Avdeev became friends with a group of former criminals and street children who became students, workers, members of labor communes and, like him, “sick” with literary creativity. They sent their immature poems, stories and essays to Maxim Gorky. The first proletarian classic helped them publish the almanac “Yesterday and Today” and wrote a preface to it. Alexey Maksimovich gave Viktor Avdeev a letter of recommendation for the workers' faculty. Avdeev's first stories appeared in 1931 in the almanac “Yesterday and Today.” In 1938, he graduated from the Gorky Literary Institute at SSP in Moscow. Before the Patriotic War, two of his books were published. In 1947, the story “Guards on the Roads” appeared in the magazine “New World”, for which Viktor Avdeev was awarded the Stalin Prize of the third degree. In recent years, the writer has published several more books. The most significant of them are “Lenka Okhnar” and “The End of Guban”. In the book “My Odyssey” the author truthfully talks about some episodes of his difficult life and in most cases names the true names and surnames of his friends and contemporaries. Currently, Viktor Avdeev lives in the city of Lipetsk, close to his heroes, and is working on a new book.
