About the book: 1987 / Magos Jr., Laszlo’s nephew, is one of the main characters in a series of short stories from the life of Hungarian border guards, reflecting the complex and tense situation of the early 50s x years. The prose writer's skill is manifested here - especially in such stories as, for example, "The Tuner", "Let's Rest in the Cold", "Son of the Sun" - in the deliberate rejection of compositional excesses, meager laconicism of writing and artlessly natural intonation. The author is far from embellishing the harsh everyday life of border guard miners, the very atmosphere of the period of confrontation and the Cold War, a time when Hungary’s internal development was also complicated by serious political mistakes and distortions. And at the same time, revealing pathos and pseudo-objective negativism are alien to him. Stories from the life of border guards are autobiographical; Istvan Gall experienced all the hardships of this service on himself - this is probably why the picture of the era in the “Iron Age” cycle written decades later turned out to be full-scale, containing both the harsh realities of the time, and the cheerfulness of youth, the moral purity of the heroes, their rough humor, sense of justice and comradely solidarity.
