About the book: 1960 / As soon as Sayre Woodling had a few glasses of whiskey, he began to see double. Unfortunately, he could not determine in advance when this unpleasant moment would come. Otherwise he would have warned the bartender at the Rock City Club not to serve him after, say, his ninth drink. The occurrence of double vision depended on many circumstances. Sometimes it appeared only after the bartender had filled his glass for the fifteenth time. Sayre learned that he was seeing double when he saw two elderly, obese men staring at him from the mirror behind the bar. And each of these absolutely identical fat men, with identical cigars in their mouths and glasses in their hands, was Sayre Woodling. By closing one eye, he could erase one twin from the mirror, but the second Sayre Woodling, now one-eyed, still looked at him. For a moment he closed both eyes and hopefully opened them again. From the mirror he was examined by the same two fat twins, with cigars between their flabby lips, dark bags under bloodshot eyes, deep wrinkles, heavy jaws over once square chins. With the appearance of the twins, Sayre Woodling left the club. He couldn't stand them.
