About the book: year / In the 9th–10th centuries, when an intense struggle flared up between the Arab Caliphate and the Byzantine Empire, the situation in Armenia was especially difficult; it found itself fragmented into separate feudal principalities, whose rulers fought among themselves for power. Both strong rivals exploited this fragmentation. All these events were vividly reflected in the historical novel “Gevorg Marzpetuni”. The theme of the novel – the struggle of the Armenian people for liberation from the Arab yoke – is based on true historical events. Ashot II Bagratuni (915–928), nicknamed “Iron,” led a fierce struggle against the Arab troops together with the patriotic princes. Muratsan managed to emphasize the leading role of Ashot Zhelezny as the unifier of Armenia. The writer understood well that the idea of unifying the country, even under monarchical rule, was progressive for that time. Ashot Zhelezny’s struggle was not limited only to national boundaries. He also helped neighboring Georgia expel the invaders from their native country. The democratic writer linked the fate of Armenia with the masses. Through the mouth of Gevorg Marzpetuni, the main character of the novel, Muratsan says: “Peasant huts, inconspicuous houses in which poor people dressed in rags live, despised by the rich - they contain the true strength of the fatherland.” Patriotism, selfless love for the motherland is the main idea of the novel. Gevorg Marzpetuni, together with his comrades-in-arms, managed to unite the princes and the entire people around Ashot the Iron. He also led those who doubted the success of the armed struggle against the enemies..
