About the book: 1938 / From the text: On May 5, 1937, a Soviet plane, controlled by pilot Golovin, flew over the North Pole, covered by a heavy cap of clouds, and returned back . On May 21, a heavy four-engine ship, piloted by Hero of the Soviet Union Mikhail Vodopyanov, made a safe landing at the North Pole. On board the ship were the head of the large Soviet expedition, academician Otto Yulievich Schmidt, Heroes of the Soviet Union Spirin, Papanin, Babushkin, Shirshov, Krenkel, Fedorov, mechanics, and radio operators. A Soviet scientific station was founded on the ice of the protected area. On May 26, the remaining three four-engine aircraft of the air expedition flew to the North Pole. The flotilla delivered ten and a half tons of various cargo to the station, consisting of scientific instruments, expeditionary equipment and food. Thirty-five Bolsheviks lived at the North Pole for eleven and sixteen days, carried out a large series of scientific observations, after which the planes flew to Rudolph Island, and from there returned to Moscow. There were four people left on the ice floe: Ivan Dmitrievich Papanin, Ernst Teodorovich Krenkel, Pyotr Petrovich Shirshov and Evgeniy Konstantinovich Fedorov. Four people spent long months in the central part of the Polar Basin, exploring these mysterious places, revealing the age-old secrets of the central Arctic. The whole world sang glory to the courage and bravery of Soviet heroes. In the name of what did they fly to the North Pole, in the name of what were they left alone with the Arctic Ocean, what are the Bolsheviks doing in the Arctic?
