About the book: 1966 / The author of this book is the famous fighter pilot, Hero of the Soviet Union Zakhar Artemovich Sorokin. During the Great Patriotic War, he fought in the skies of the Arctic, in the famous Red Banner Guards Fighter Regiment named after twice Hero of the Soviet Union B.F. Safonov. Sorokin’s front-line fate was not easy. In the fall of 1941, in an air battle, he rammed a fascist plane. The severely wounded and severely frostbitten pilot found the strength to overcome several tens of kilometers of deserted tundra and reach his own people. Doctors amputated both of his feet.
