About the book: 1965 / The book "Notes on Life" was published by Faskell in 1899, three years after Daudet's death. In the preface to it, Julia Daudet wrote: “Throughout his entire life, Alphonse Daudet never published his scattered thoughts: he wrote them down from time to time, by inspiration, and he could be inspired by a word he accidentally heard, or a casual remark. Sometimes he wrote them down in special notebooks, but more often - in the same ones in which he jotted down notes for chapters of novels; they are written in the margins, or across the text or cover. And often this quick note - just one line crossing the book that was in progress - was the first idea, the germ of a future book... Those thoughts that he used, he crossed out, erased with a thick red or blue pencil... I collected others that remained untouched and not with which book are clearly not related...” Our edition includes most of the notes from the first part: they were made in different years, from 1868 to the year of the writer’s death. Notes related to the trip to London, Venice, the death of Edmond Goncourt in Chanrose, as well as recordings of dreams and sketches of the future book “Caravan” were not included in it. “Notes on Life” is translated into Russian for the first time.
