In his youth, after graduating from flight school and the Polytechnic Institute in his native Leningrad, he became an engineer and test pilot at TsAGI-LII. He took part in the Great Patriotic War and during the first raid on Moscow he shot down a fascist plane. Honored test pilot, Hero of the Soviet Union, Mark Gallay mastered 125 types of aircraft; was an instructor in spacecraft piloting techniques for the first (Gagarin) six cosmonauts.
