MediaDB / «Trials of witchcraft in Europe and the Russian Empire" Yakov Kantorovich: download fb2, read online
About the book: 2014 / One of the Jesuits wrote at the end of the 16th century: “Our prisons are overcrowded with witches and sorcerers. Not a day goes by that our judges do not stain their hands with their blood, and that we do not return home shuddering with sad thoughts of the terrible, disgusting things that these witches confess to. But the devil is so skillful that we barely have time to send witches to the stake before new witches arise from their ashes.” The inquisitors worked brilliantly: during the reign of King Francis I alone, over one hundred thousand women were burned in France. The same thing happened throughout Europe - in Spain, Germany, Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and other countries. They destroyed beauties and ugly women, smart people and mentally ill people; ancient old women and ten-year-old girls, who in one way or another stood out from the impersonal crowd, were put on fires on charges of intercourse with the devil. The book by writer and lawyer Yakov Kantorovich tells how this happened - how denunciations were written, evidence was collected, investigations were conducted, how executions took place. (1859–1925).
