The play presents a romantic adaptation of the ancient story about the Amazon queen Penthesilea, who fell in love with the Greek hero Achilles. Challenged by him to a duel and tormented by two contradictory feelings - passion and a sense of revenge on a man, Penthesilea kills the hero and dies after him.
