In the dim light the trees began to take on unfamiliar and threatening shapes. The shadows moved. Low hanging branches blocked his path. The leaves, soaked in the rain, slid, clinging, along the cheek. He could hear sounds behind him and continued to quicken his pace until he tripped over the protruding roots of a bulky oak tree and plunged headlong into the blackness. Hitherto unknown horrors reached out to him, pinning him to the ground. He felt something burning across his neck. The face was pressed under damp soil. Richard lay very still, but could hear the unsteady echoes of his own breathing. Opening his eyes, he saw that he had fallen into the thickets and found himself a prisoner of nothing more sinister than gray blackberries and branches broken by the weight of his own body.
