With a long mustache on his upper lip, with a luxurious oseledets, or chupryna, on the crown of his head, in a pointed lambskin cap on his head, always with a cradle in his teeth, the true Cossack always looked somehow gloomily, downwards, from under his brows, and at first greeted strangers unfriendly, answered questions very reluctantly, but then little by little he softened, his face gradually took on a cheerful look during the conversation, his lively, penetrating eyes lit up with a sparkle of fire, and his whole figure breathed with courage, daring, infectious gaiety and inimitable humor.
