About the book: 2016 / "Crusoe", the first novel by the famous German poet Lutz Seiler, was awarded the main literary prize in Germany in 2014. The events of the novel take place in the summer of 1989 on the island of Hiddensee. Student Ed, who has suffered a personal tragedy, comes here in the hope of finding himself again. Here, in the border zone between freedom and unfreedom, flock the “castaways” - people who feel like strangers, unnecessary in socialist Germany and want to leave it. Having met Crusoe, Ed begins to understand that this young guy with a difficult fate is trying with all his might to help the “castaways”, to protect them from death. Meanwhile, things are moving towards the reunification of Germany, and the Cruze aid system and dangerous illegal escapes are no longer needed…
