This edition of the Russian translation of Yaroslav Pelikan’s five-volume study “The Christian Tradition: The History of the Development of Doctrine” (1971–1989) was carried out within the framework of the joint scientific publishing project “Christian Theology. XX century" of the Synodal Theological Commission of the Russian Orthodox Church and the Cultural Center "Spiritual Library". Yaroslav Pelikan is an outstanding modern expert on Christianity from different eras. He studied in depth the ancient patristic heritage of East and West and explored its complex relationship with classical thought and culture. At the same time, the subject of his scientific interest was the great theological syntheses of the Middle Ages, as well as the evolution of Christian doctrine during the Reformation and later until the 20th century. The scientist’s special contribution lies in the fact that he was able to convey to the Western reader the complex and rich heritage of the Eastern Christian tradition, still not well known outside the Orthodox churches. In this he was helped by Russian theologians, both from the pre-revolutionary era and those who worked in exile, whose works he, an expert in many languages, including Slavic, read in the original.
