About the book: year / Andrew Walder's book chronicles the rise and fall of the Maoist revolutionary state from 1949 to 1976 - an era of astonishing achievements and catastrophic failures. China under Mao, Walder argues, was distinguished by two institutions created during the first decade of Communist Party rule: a party apparatus that exercised firm (sometimes brutal) control over its cadres, and a socialist economy modeled on the Soviet Union. Although this authoritarian system was overseen by a national bureaucracy, Mao intervened decisively at every turn. By misdiagnosing China's ills as capitalist restoration and prescribing as the solution the continuation of class struggle against imaginary enemies, Mao destroyed much of what he had built and ended up did not give the destroyed any viable alternative.
