About the book: year / AMBROSE of Milan (340–397) - saint, Milanese bishop, preacher and hymnographer. As for the hymns of St. Ambrose, tradition has preserved many of them under the name Ambrosian. But since the name Ambrosian was used in the early period not only in the sense of the authorship of the Bishop of Milan, but also in the sense of imitation of his hymns, the name alone was not enough to resolve the issue of authenticity. Up to 30 hymns have been attributed to St. Ambrose, but only 12 of them are more likely to be his (some go up to 18). The authorship of the famous hymn “We Praise Thee, O God” is also questioned, although there is a legend that it was sung by St. Ambrose together with Blessed Augustine at the latter’s Baptism. Until the 8th century. There are no traces of this legend and this hymn was not attributed to Saint Ambrose, although it was known without his name in the West already from the first half of the 6th century. and is mentioned in the monastic charter of St. Benedict of Nursia. In terms of content, the hymns of St. Ambrose are distinguished by their general church character. These are hymns of confession of the Christian faith, setting out the essence of Christian teaching. They speak of the incarnation of the Redeemer (the birth of the Virgin, two natures, the descent into hell), the teaching of the Cross of Christ is revealed (the destruction of the kingdom of death and the bestowal of grace), the believers are called to spiritual wakefulness, and the saving fruits of such wakefulness are depicted.
