About the book: 2017 / Alexey Fedorovich Grekov is known for his works in three scientific directions at once - printing, electroplating and daguerreotype. Coming from a family of small landed nobility, he was educated at the Second Cadet Corps in St. Petersburg. However, he did not serve in the military field for long, resigned of his own free will and transferred to civilian positions - first he served in the Kostroma province, and then in Moscow, in the university printing house: Alexey Fedorovich was an assistant to the publisher of Moskovskie Vedomosti. These were his golden years, when, in addition to typographic work, he was able to conduct experiments in electroplating, organize a daguerreotype studio and experiment with the production of cameras, shooting portraits - he is considered the author of the first camera made in Russia (then they were called daguerreotype “shells”), and the first to create a full-fledged daguerreotype studio in our country. Grekov was, first of all, an active practitioner who responded to the great discoveries of his time and looked for ways to develop and improve new technologies, but he also left behind theoretical works: several books and journal articles. Nothing was written about him for a long time, as if they had completely forgotten - most likely due to the dramatic ending of life. And only from the middle of the 20th century, historians of photography and printing production began to regularly mention the name of Alexei Fedorovich in specialized articles and books, paying tribute to the activities of this gambling man before experiments. As a rule, these were very brief notes, which is largely natural: very little biographical information about him has been preserved. This publication is the first book in Russia dedicated to Alexey Fedorovich Grekov. It was created on the basis of archival documents and his author’s texts.
