About the book: year / After the assassination of Emperor Alexander II, a negative attitude towards Russian nihilists prevailed in the American press, but after the publications of Russian political emigrant revolutionaries, attitudes towards revolutionaries began to change. Journalist J. Kennan's critical publications about the Siberian exile raised a wave of indignation in the United States over the methods of the tsarist authorities' struggle against the revolutionary movement. In 1891, on the initiative of S. M. Stepnyak-Kravchinsky (S. Stepnyak), the American Society of Friends of Russian Freedom was formed. It included prominent American public figures of New York and Boston. The organization throughout its history was associated with prominent members of the Socialist Revolutionary Party (F.V. Volkhovsky, E.K. BreshkoBreshkovskaya). At the beginning of the 20th century, the society became one of the important channels for foreign propaganda of the Socialist Revolutionary Party and the collection of money for the party.
