About the book: year / Turgenev’s article is an example of philosophical, socially active criticism, which Belinsky advocated. For Turgenev, Goethe’s “Faust” is a work permeated with passionate, searching thought; it is the apotheosis of the human personality’s struggle for its rights. However, Goethe limited Faust’s passionate search for the true meaning of life to the narrow sphere of the “personal and human”, and in this Turgenev saw the reason for the failure of the second part of the tragedy, believing that the task of historical progress is not the happiness of an individual human person, but the destruction of every possibility of the poor on earth.
