About the book: 1983 / The collection of the famous Czech prose writer Josef Kadlec includes three stories. “Return from Budapest” touches on the most pressing issue about the active moral position of a person in society. The official vicissitudes of the engineer Bendle, which required endurance and courage from him, constitute the main conflict of the work. “Viola” is a poetic story-ballad about love; its main characters suffered difficult trials during the years of the fascist occupation of Czechoslovakia. “The Ballad of the Dark Boxer” continues the theme of “Viola” in its own way, telling about the life of Prague during the Bohemian and Moravian protectorate, about the growth of resistance to fascism.
