About the book: 1897 / In the summer months of 1884, 1885, 1886, 1887 and 1888, I had the good fortune to accompany Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich in his traveling in the north and west of Russia, as well as in some central provinces. I described these travels in correspondence, which were published in a timely manner in Moskovskiye Vedomosti and, finally, in 1886 and 1888. appeared in two separate editions, no longer available for sale, under the titles: “Across the North of Russia” and “Baltic Side”. When reviewing the book for a secondary edition, it was proposed, for greater convenience, to combine all six trips into one; but since the assumption turned out to be impossible without obvious damage to the accuracy of the content, this idea was abandoned and the order outlined in the first edition was preserved, that is, six paths are described. In the present, second edition, all details related to the interests of the day and which at one time had high, sometimes political, significance are excluded. Historical, geographical, ethnographic, etc. information has been preserved and partially expanded. An undoubted gap in the descriptions must be considered that not all the remarkable features of this or that city, this or that area are described; the reason for this is that not all of them were visited by the August Traveler and therefore could not be included in the description. I consider it my duty to express my sincere gratitude to L. B. Weinberg, who took the trouble to review the entire work and give it a modern character. I also cannot help but remember the publisher A.F. Marx, who made it possible for my work to appear again in a very expanded form, especially with regard to illustrations, and at a very inexpensive price, affordable for many.
