In this case, an artist who is unable to create an original work, but brilliantly copies the paintings of masters (the novel contains many references to the history of Belgian painting). As a result, the question inevitably arises about the equality of the copy and the original, about the very nature of originality - and the hero painfully tries to resolve this question.
