The first years that I was here, we had a fairly large Russian group, and then we had conversations weekly. Then people of English began to appear; By that time I had learned a little English, and we began to have conversations in English. And then there was a long period when there were no Russian conversations, because all the Russians living here spoke English better than me, and they didn’t need special conversations. (...) Over the past one and a half to two years (i.e. since 1989), when the path from Russia to the West opened and Russians from the Soviet Union who did not speak English began to arrive, we resumed Russian conversations, and now they happen once a month. [...]Four times a year (Christmas and Lent - Ed.) we have Saturday, which is called “fasting”: twice a year in English, twice a year in Russian. It happens like this, we start with prayer, then I have a conversation that lasts about forty minutes, after that a period of about three quarters of an hour or an hour when everyone is obliged to remain silent. In the church no one speaks, no one prevents others from remaining silent in the silence, both internal and ecclesiastical: the church has its own silence, and I mercilessly demand that people do not interfere with others being silent in their depths. Then we eat together, that is, everyone brings something, and we eat what was brought together and drink tea. Then a second conversation and a second silence, and then a general confession...”
