MediaDB / «Strategems" Polyaen: download fb2, read online
About the book: 2002 / We bring to the reader's attention the first domestic translation from the original language of the famous work of the Greek author of the mid-2nd century AD. e. Polyaena from Macedonia, about whom it is only known that by the beginning of the Parthian War (161-162), despite his advanced age, he continued to act as a lawyer in the imperial courts in Rome and it was there, in a fairly short period, that he wrote an essay on military tricks called “Strategems” or “Strategy,” which later brought him world fame. This work is essentially a talented compilation, which, however, in no way diminishes the importance of this book for historians, since the evidence given by Polyaenus is sometimes unique, since many of the sources used by the author of the “Strateges” have not survived. On the pages of this work you will find a fascinating description of the military tricks, tricks and heroic deeds of Greek, Roman and barbarian kings and generals, starting with mythological heroes and ending with Caesar and Octavian Augustus. Polyaenus's "Strategems" is actually an encyclopedia of military thought and military practice of antiquity. The translation of the text is accompanied by extensive comments.
