About the book: 2004 / The twin-engine long-range bomber Il-4 became the first aircraft developed by S.V. Ilyushin and his OKB. The aircraft entered service with the Red Army Air Force under the designation DB-3 at the end of 1936. In March 1942, the modernized version of the DB-3F was renamed Il-4. The aircraft gained worldwide fame after setting a world record for flight range by pilot V.K. Kokkinaki and navigator Mikhail Gordienko on an experimental TsKB-30 with its own name “Moscow”. The plane was supposed to fly along the route Moscow - New York on April 29, 1939, but due to bad weather, Kokkinaki had to land on Miskow Island, located north of Cape New Brunswick in Canada. The plane stayed in the air for 22 hours and 56 minutes. A distance of 80,000 km was covered at an average speed of 348 km/h. TsKB-30 became the first Soviet aircraft to land on the North American continent.
