  • MediaDB / «Rome, Naples and Florence" Frederic Stendhal: download fb2, read online

About the book: 1978 / "Rome, Naples and Florence" is not a guide in the truest sense of the word: there are neither exact routes nor an exhaustive description monuments, or other practical information that might be needed by a helpless traveler who finds himself in this so unique and so attractive country. But there is something else here. Reading this book, you begin to better understand Italian society and people in their national and historical characteristics. This people, about which in most cases the authors of countless guidebooks and travel essays were silent, in Stendhal’s book lives its own intense inner life, and its character and reaction to external events are manifested in a hundred anecdotes, told in an unusually lively and fascinating way. Stendhal is trying to recreate this special system of thought and feelings in all its historical uniqueness. He points out the social reasons for this amazing national identity, connecting the Italian character with the historical life of the people and with the conditions of their present political existence. Thus, he explains the situation of contemporary Italy and makes clear what might seem strange to an untrained eye.
