MediaDB / «The Last Man from Atlantis" Alexander Belyaev: download fb2, read online
About the book: 1957 / One of the first works of Alexander Belyaev. The novel was first published on the pages of the fifth to eighth issues of the World Pathfinder magazine in 1926. The following year, 1927, it was published in Belyaev’s first author’s collection along with “The Island of Lost Ships.” Then the novel was not republished for a long time, until in 1957 it was reprinted by the magazine “Knowledge is Power” (No. 4–5). In subsequent years, it was published several times. Belyaev’s idea of searching for the lost civilization of Atlantis was prompted by a note published in the French newspaper Le Figaro: “A society for the study and exploitation of Atlantis has been organized in Paris.” In the first quarter of the 20th century, such societies arose and burst quite often - enterprising businessmen - the adventurers skillfully capitalized on the increased interest in the history of Atlantis (Atlangomania) that was spreading at that time. Thus, at the hand of the science fiction writer, the newspaper article turned into a prologue to “The Last Man from Atlantis” (the story of Mr. Solly). Belyaev drew material for the description of Atlantis itself from the book by Roger Devigne “The Vanished Continent. Atlantis, the sixth part of the world" (in Russian under the title "Atlantis, the Vanished Continent" was published in 1926), which is mentioned directly in the text of the story (see p. 136). To a large extent, the story is an artistic version of Devigne's book - similar to How "Island of Lost Ships" was a literary version of an American action movie.
