About the book: 2010 / Afghan Atiq Rahimi lives in France and writes books to tell the truth about his war-torn country. Having published several novels in his native language, Rahimi decided to write a book in the language of his new homeland, and this first attempt was so successful that the novel “Singe Sabur (The Stone of Patience)” was awarded France’s highest literary award, the Prix Goncourt, in 2008. In this short novel, through the monologue of an Afghan woman, a broad panorama of the entire life of today's Afghanistan appears, with the stupid feudal cruelty of intra-family relations, the boredom of everyday life and at the same time the poetry of the beliefs of the ancient people.* * *This stone, you know, is such that if you put him in front of you, then you can pour out to him all your sorrows and sorrows, and suffering, and grief, and adversity... And the stone listens to you, absorbs all your words, all your secrets, until one day it cracks and crumbles. That’s how this stone is called: singe sabur, the stone of patience! Atik Rahimi* * *Tank volleys, heads cut off by the Mujahideen, the night howling of dogs eating corpses, and Sufi legends told by an old sage on his deathbed - this is the cruel everyday life of an Afghan village, one of many who found themselves in the midst of a civil war. Afghan writer Atiq Rahimi described it in French in his story “The Stone of Patience,” which won the Prix Goncourt in 2008, one of the most prestigious awards in the literary world of Europe. It is amazing that this eerie text is actually about love - the strong, passionate and tragic love of a young Afghan woman for her mortally wounded mujahideen husband.
