Therefore, it is no coincidence that the title of this book is: Warsaw is the collective hero of the novel. It shows the fate of Warsaw residents during the years of occupation, the fate of those who participated in the Resistance movement. Among them is the main character of the book, the young Breton Anna-Marie le Bon. Having ended up in Warsaw, married a Pole, and lost him during the uprising, she remains forever in Poland, with the Warsaw people, whom she came to know, understand and love more deeply during the war years.
