Ryabinin, who prepared and published notes in Russian in the magazine "Russian Antiquity" in 1874, wrote that although the memoirs have typical shortcomings of foreign works describing our fatherland: lack of thorough study and understanding of the country, superficial or arrogant attitude to much of what has been seen, but they also have undoubted advantages: a lively depiction of individual personalities, a keen look at events, apt characteristics of some phenomena of Russian life.
