About the book: 2008 / Nazi troops entered Poland in 1939, and already in the forties, “Jewish residential areas” were created in many cities of the occupied country - quarters fenced off from the rest of the city, where the Jewish population driven there lived, or rather, slowly died, under constant guard. The systematic liquidation of the ghetto, which began soon, ended in 1943. However, in Warsaw, the armed fascist detachments that burst into the streets of the ghetto were unexpectedly resisted. The unequal struggle did not last long: in mid-July the ruins of the completely destroyed area were completely empty. But before that, several groups of participants in the uprising managed to escape from behind the walls. A book was written about one of them, a member of the rebel headquarters, Marek Edelman. It is called: “Ahead of the Lord God”, published in Krakow in 1977. The author, Hanna Krall, painted a “double” portrait of her hero. On the pages of this small book, two times met and mixed: the last terrible months of the existence of the ghetto, the story of which was written down from the words of Edelman, and the subsequent years - in a world without war - the years of life and work of himself and his medical colleagues (Edelman - cardiologist, resident one of the Lodz clinics).
