About the book: year / Professor of History August Cray collected and summarized the stories and testimonies of participants in the First Crusade (1096–1099) from Pope Urban II's speech at the Council of Clermont to the capture of Jerusalem in one fascinating narrative. The book presents extensive fragments from the “Acts of the Franks”, “Jerusalem History” by Fulcher of Chartres, the chronicle of Raymond of Agil, “Alexiad” by Anna Komnenos, messages and letters from the time of the campaign. All these testimonies, written by church ministers, crusading knights, sovereign princes and dukes, recreate the spirit of the era and introduce the reader to the history of the conquest of Jerusalem, the acquisition of especially revered relics, as well as legends and traditions of the Holy Land.
