We will only look at four. We will see dashing carts depicted on them, dark-maned frisky horses, we will see red fighters - machine gunners, standard bearers, trumpeters. Battles, battles used to be called battles, and therefore artists who paint battles are called battle painters. Grekov was a battle painter. He lived on the Don River. There, in the Don steppes, hot battles took place for Soviet power, for a new life. The artist saw fierce battles. I saw how the Reds burst into cities and villages like a whirlwind, and how the Whites retreated in panic. It was there, on the Don, that the First Cavalry Army grew out of a small partisan detachment. And Mitrofan Grekov became its artist. On his canvases he glorified the battles and victories of the First Cavalry.
