About the book: 2024 / There are three narrators in this story. Leonie, a far from ideal mother of two children, is in constant conflict with herself and with those around her. Her thirteen-year-old son Jojo, who cares much more about his five-year-old sister than Leonie, learns from his grandfather what it means to be a man. And another narrator is the boy Richie, the same age as JoJo, who died in Parchman prison. Leonie and the children go to that same prison to pick up their newly released father, Michael. On the way along the Mississippi, both the characters themselves and the readers learn a lot about the secrets of the family and the hardships of life in the American South.
