About the book: 1984 / Armenian epic David of Sassoun is one of the oldest folk tales. He has been living for the second millennium. Every epic constitutes the spiritual treasure of a people and is its unique history. David of Sassoun is no exception in this sense. It reflects the cherished thoughts and dreams of the Armenians, the centuries-old struggle for independence, the life and character of the people, their artistic history. And it is no coincidence that this epic excited the imagination of many Armenian artists - sculptors, painters, writers. He served as a source of creative inspiration for the classics of Armenian literature Hovhannes Tumanyan, Avetik Isahakyan, Yeghishe Charents and our contemporaries. In the early 60s, the publishing house approached the famous Armenian poet and prose writer Nairi Zaryan (1901-1968) with a proposal to retell the epic “David of Sassoun” in prose. This is how this book was created, which was then translated into Russian by N.M. Lyubimov, well known to readers from his translations of the immortal works of Cervantes and Rabelais. Nairi Yeghiazarovich Zaryan is one of the founders of Armenian Soviet literature, poet, prose writer and playwright, author of several collections of poems, novels and plays. His poem "Ara the Beautiful" was included in the golden fund of national literature. Drawings by M. Sosoyan.
