About the book: 2021 / James Clavell (1924–1994) - screenwriter, director, producer and writer - was born in Australia. His father and grandfather were officers in the British Royal Navy. They preserved in young James a love of stories of ocean voyages, exotic ports and great men. At an early age, Clavell began studying Eastern culture. His ability for languages broadened the horizons of the future writer. Following family tradition, Clavell chooses a military career. During World War II, he was captured and spent more than three years in Japanese camps. An accident that occurred to Clavell while on holiday in England forced him to end his military career. Having tried himself in various fields, James found his calling in the film industry, which was experiencing a rapid rise in the late 1940s. In 1953, he emigrated to the USA, where he worked in television and began his career as a screenwriter. But it is his novels that bring him real fame. Clavell is a recognized master in the genre of historical adventure literature.
