About the book: 1987 / The appearance in print of the stories of this cycle marked the beginning of Emilian Stanev's literary activity. Most of them are devoted to the life of the Bulgarian province or the attempts of a provincial to adapt to the conditions of the capital. They vividly reflected the life, customs, and characteristic features of Stanev’s fellow countrymen in Elena and Tarnovo; in an artistically transformed form, they captured actual events that the writer himself witnessed or participated in. Stanev collected the best of these stories in the book “Everyday Life and Holidays” (1945), which gave the name to the entire cycle. In this edition, five more stories are added to the ones usually included in this cycle: “Ideas”, “Poor Man’s Joy”, “Across the River”, “Jealousy” and “Peasant Women”, which during the writer’s lifetime were published only in periodicals.
